The first step in dating the gospels is to establish the order in which they were written. Because Bibles list them in the order, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, it is often thought that this is the order in which they were written. In fact, scholars have established that the authors of both Matthewand Luke relied on Mark's Gospel for everything they knew about the life and mission of Jesus. Moreover, it has been shown that John's Gospel was inspired by Luke's Gospel, with some material drawn directly from Mark. So, the order in which the New Testament gospels were written is: Mark, Matthew, Luke and John.

Evidence internal to Mark's Gospel shows that it was written approximately 70 CE, which means that the other gospels were all later. One fairly general method of deciding the correct order between Matthew and Luke is to look at the development of antisemitic sentiment over the course of the New Testament. Paul's genuine epistles, which all preceded the gospels, show no antisemitic sentiment; Mark's Gospel merely blames the Jewish religious authorities for the death of Jesus; Matthew's Gospel is noticeable in its anti-Judaism; Luke becomes more strident; then John's Gospel is quite definitely anti-Jewish. This is the first reason for believing that Matthew was written before Luke, although they are quite independent of each other. Matthew's Gospel is generally dated to the eighties of the first century, although Raymond E. Brown (An Introduction to the New Testament) says that an allowance should be made of up to ten years either way.

Luke's Gospel appears to rely on the works of Josephus for historical background material, and Acts of the Apostles certainly does. This suggests that Luke must have been written no earlier than the late 90s of the first century, and probably in the early years of the second century, although some feel it should be dated to the early 90s. Acts of the Apostles was written after Luke and, based on its frequent use of Josephus' Antiquities of the Jews, must be an early second-century book. On the other hand, some say that it also must have been written earlier in the 90s of the first century because of the discrepancies between this book and Paul's epistles, which were not widely circulated until the end of the first century. However, Acts shows evidence of being based loosely on the epistles, and the discrepancies are more likely the result of wishing to correct prevailing views about Paul.

Naturally, as John was written after Luke, it is the last New Testament gospel, and is to be dated early in the second century. Scholars debate whether some of the second century Church Fathers knew of John's Gospel, and any such evidence would help date the Gospel more closely, but this is inconclusive.

Which Gospels are the first four written for the new testament?

AnswerWe only know the probable order of events from the gospels themselves, so it could be hard to state that one is more accurate in terms of chronology than another. However, many Christians accept that John's Gospel, which differs so much from the other gospels, is not in chronological order. Matthew and Luke are similar to each other and to Mark. Perhaps, since Mark's Gospel was the first of the gospels and was used as the major source for Matthew and Luke, Mark may be more accurate in terms of chronology.AnswerThe synoptic gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke are all chronological in form. Luke contains the most comprehensive coverage of events so could be regarded as the most chronological in that sense.
