"Maya" (Illusion of the perceived) or "Leela" (play of God) are central concepts of Hinduism. This helps hindus not to take life very seriously. Theists would say that whatever happens will be by will of the God and atheists would say that whatever happens will depend upon probability and chance. Both ways, one does not have full control over what happens, so why worry, do the best under the circumstances (follow your duty and leave the rest on God).

"Maya" is a scientific idea. We know that atoms and sub-atomic particles are not solid balls. They are the results of fluctuations in the quantum fields. But our brain perceives these fluctuations as self, other humans, animals, vegetation, and non-living objects. The perceived may be pragmatic, but is not true, it is only an illusion.
