Modern science tends towards a deist definition of God - an uninvolved prime mover, who provides a more easily grasped point of origin than the still-inconclusive speculations of string theory. This is Einstein's kind of God: he doesn't play dice, but nobody knows who he is. Earlier scientists considered themselves made in the image of the creator God, and so spent their time with practical investigation of understanding the creation, supposing such understanding to be within their grasp.
