The first 5 books (Genesis through Deuteronomy) of the Old Testament are the Pentateuch (the Torah in the Hebrew Bible) written by Moses.

The next 13 books (Joshua through Job) are designated as History books (although there is history found throughout the Old Testament).

Then next 4 books (Psalms through Song of Solomon) are referred to as Poetry books. The Psalms were originally songs that the Jews sang to God.

The remaining 17 books (Isaiah through Malachi) are Prophecy books. They were written by prophets of God. They do relate historical events and foretell future events (some of which have already been fulfilled).
