When Guru Nanak Dev ji went for a bath he went missing for 3 days and when he reappeared he uttered the words" na koi Hindu na musalman" that is there is no caste or creed, none is Hindu or a Muslim, all are the children of one God and are equally dear to him
Guru Nanak Dev Ji used to go for bathing to the Banaras river where he lived. On one morning he went for his daily bath and did not come out of river. Everybody thought he drowned.Guru Nanak Dev Ji reappeared after three days and thus started his teachings what is known as Sikhism today.

Guru Nanak Dev Ji is the founder of what is called Sikhism. He started the religon and wrote 974 verse in Sri Guru Granth Sahib. Guru Gobind Singh Ji was the tenth Guru. He named the Sri Guru Granth Sahib (Sikhs Holy Scripture) as the last Guru to try to prevent further changes in Sikhism. He also founded the Khalsa (saint-soldiers) on April 13th, 1699. This was an order of Sikhs who were founded to defend the defenseless in the name of Waheguru (God). At one time it was said you could go up to a Khalsa and slap him (or her) and he (or she) would not strike you, however if you attacked another person they would try to stop you. For that purpose they carried a Kirpan (hand of mercy) which is a knife or sword. Unfortunately some groups view the Khalsa as the only true Sikhs. However the current Guru of the Sikhs, the Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji, says otherwise.They are not different in anyway except there physical body. Guru Nanak Dev Ji said that he would have the same soul but in 10 diffrent forms and they will build a new race know as the khalsa.
Guru Nanak dev ji realised God wanted him to do God's work ;So when one day Guru Nanak dev ji went to take bath in wei river as usual , he spent in the river three days ;God spoke to him ; God said " Go & glorify my name , spread peace & love , & destroy hypocrisy ";So he was alone with god in river for 3 days & when he came out , he uttered " God is neither Hindu nor Muslim , So whose path shall I follow ? , I shall follow god's path " & then he started preaching Sikhism ; Guru Nanak had revelations from God & as he continued uttering God's word , It was later recorded in a book & this became Guru Granth Sahib later ";
Guru Nanak Dev ji's students, followers were from every community, but most are Hindu and Muslims. When Guru Nanak Dev ji's soul left their body, both of them started fighting over performing last rites according to their religion. Guru Nanak Dev ji's body was inside a room over a bed-sheet and fully covered by a bed-sheet too. Muslims insisted that it should be cremated while hindus wanted it to burn. A few minutes later, a man came and told both of them that he met Guru Nanak Dev on his way who told him to deliver his message not fight to his followers. Everybody was caought unaware when they inside and saw just too bed-sheets lying. But still, both of them took one bed sheet each performed last rites according to their religion on bedsheets. Hindus and Muslims built a temple and mosque respectively. That was near an ocean. But again both, temple and mosque were taken away by a storm and it was heard that now Guru Nanak lives in heart of Guru Angad.

Guru Nanak started off Sikhism. He chose the 2nd Guru (Guru Agnad) as his 2 sons failed to complete a series of errands whilst Agnad did them for the Guru. The rest of the information is all pretty much the same, the present Guru would chose someone to success them if this person was devoted enough etc.....The 2nd last Guru was worried that someone might change the stories slightly, so he wrote everything into the book called the Guru Granth Sahib. This is the current and final guru.Any extra info use wikipedia by searching there names to see what they contributed to Sikhism or go to http://sikhism.about.com/od/tengurus/tp/Ten-Gurus-Timeline.htm for all of the Gurus and a bit of info on them.hope helped.
No Hindu, and no MuslimGuru Nanak was always thinking about God. Neither looking after cattle nor trade interested him much. So his father was very sad. He thought of his marriage, so Nanak was married when he was 18 years old. A large number of friends and relatives were present and there were grand feasts. Everybody was happy there. Nanak's father and mother were very happy to have their daughter-in-law in the house.Nanak and his wife lived together. They were happy. After some years they had two sons. Guru Nanak used to spend most of his time in thinking about God and helping the poor. His father thought him idle and was not happy at all. So he made a plan to send Nanak to Sultanpur.Nanak's only sister, Bibi Nanaki, lived there. Her husband was an officer. Nanaki was very happy to see her brother at Sultanpur. After some time Nanak started work as a store keeper. He worked hard. Everybody liked him. The common people loved him. His family also joined him there. Everything looked fine and his father was happy.Guru Nanak would spend his mornings and evenings in singing hymns. Both the Hindus and the Muslims came to him. They liked his teaching.Nanak would get up early in the morning, go out to bathe in the river and pray to God. One day he went out to bathe in the river as usual. He did not come back. His friends went out to find him. Everybody in the house was upset. They couldn't find him anywhere.Another day passed but still Nanak had not come back. Some people thought he must have drowned in the river. So nothing could be done. But Nanak's sister could not believe that. She was sure Nanak would come back because he still had a lot to do for all men on this earth.At last, after three days, Guru Nanak appeared. He was sitting outside on the village common. Everybody was surprised and people ran to see him. Nanak sat alone. He was very quiet.Nanak's wife, his parents and friends were very happy. Their eyes were wet with tears of joy. Soon there was a big crowd of people. An old man came out and asked, "Where have you been all these days, Nanak?""Nowhere. Here. I was with God. Now I have to do a lot of work," said Guru Nanak."A lot of work! For whom? For the Hindus or the Muslims?" asked the man."For none of them. There is no Hindu and no Muslim," replied Nanak."What! No Hindu and no Musalman? Aren't we Muslims? We say our Namaz (Prayer) five time a day don't we?" asked the old man angrily."I am afraid you are wrong. You think yourselves as Hindus and Muslims first and last. You forget that you are men first and something else. We are the sons of the one GOD. We are all brothers. So there is no Hindu and no Muslim," said Nanak."If you think so, are you ready to join us for prayer in the Mosque?" asked the man."Yes, gladly. I am always ready to pray to God," replied Nanak.So they went to the Mosque (Muslim church) and all the people went with them. In the mosque Daulat Khan, the chief of Sultanpur was also present. He was happy to see Nanak there and thought that Nanak had become a Muslim. The prayer started. All bowed and said words of prayer. But Nanak stood silent and only watched what they were doing.After the prayer, Daulat Khan asked Nanak angrily, "Why did you not follow us in the prayer? You were simply standing and doing nothing.""Ah, certainly I wanted to join the prayer but I found nobody in the mosque here," said Nanak."No, you are lying. Couldn't you see the crowd of people here?" said Daulat Khan."Certainly your bodies were here but your minds were far, far away. You were buying horses in Arabia far away from this prayer carpet. How then could I join you?" said Nanak with a smile.Daulat Khan was surprised that Nanak could know what he was thinking at the time of prayer. Guru Nanak said, "Words alone do not make a prayer. A prayer should come right from the heart. I am always ready to join such a prayer." At this Daulat Khan bowed before the Guru and promised to offer his prayers from the heart. All the people there accepted the Guru's way."When a man wants to become a Hindu, they put a thread of cotton around his neck. But if, after this, his actions are not good, his bathing and washing are useless. The Muslims praise their own creed. "Believe in the 'Pir' or you won't see God," they say. But only a few act upon the words of the 'Pir'. Their actions will speak in God's court. Without good deeds, none will find the way. Very few speak the truth of all truths. Nanak, for them, there will be no tests."Guru Nanak"Castes are folly, names are folly. All creatures have one shelter, that of God. If a man calls himself good, The truth shall be known O Nanak, When his actions are accounted tor, Under the Guru's instruction Regard all men as equal, Since God's light is contained in every heart."Guru NanakAdvocate Harbinder Singh Kalsi,Guwahati-781005 (Assam)India.
Sikhism started in the year 1469 ( 5 Centuries ago ) with the birth of Guru Nanak . Guru Gobind Singh Ji established Khalsa Panth on 13 April 1699 and instructed every Sikh to use the words Singh ( for men ) and Kaur (for Women) along with their name. Sikhs prior to that don't use the words "Singh and Kaur" with their name.Sikhism started with the birth of Guru Nanak Dev ji, and its teachings and opinions were quite different from Hinduism. The 9th Guru of Sikhs, Guru Teg Bahadur Ji, did sacrifice his life to save Kashmiri Pandits, only because forcing someone to change the religion is against humanity and Sikhism. He did this for the sake of humanity not for the Hindus or Hinduism. Even if it would have been some other religion, his action would have been the same. Sikhism was established to stop the fightings of Hindus & Muslims.Sikhism was founded by our first Guru, Guru Nanak Dev Ji, legends say when he was born, light had come over the darkness like every other day. His birth was legendary. His father, had later on in his younger years given him money to go something good. Guruji had a very big heart so he had bought food for the homeless and poor that lived on the streets in his village.Sikhism can said to be founded by all Ten Sikh Gurus with each of them adding an important attribute to the Soul of SikhismGuru Nanak dev ji and the other nine Gurus founded Sikhism.
At the age of 30, Guru Nanak Dev Ji was thought to get drowned in the local stream where he used to go for his daily bath.Three days later he appeared back and answered the same to whatever question he was poised, " There is no Hindu, there is no Muslim". This event is the one where Guru Nanak gets enlightenment, after this every moment was significant as Guru Nanak Dev Ji traveled all of India, Tibet, Afghanistan, Iran,Iraq, Mecca and Sri Lanka spreading his message. One day the Guru thought about God for a very long time, instead of watching the cattle. He was tired. So he fell asleep under a tree. The cattle went into a cornfield. They ate up a lot of corn and all the plants were destroyed. The Guru did not know this and was still sleeping when the farmer came up. He was very angry to see his crops eaten up. He took the cattle away and told the police. The police went to tell the Guru's father. Many people went with them. The police chief was Mr. Rai Bular. He took Kalu and the farmer to the fields. All the people followed them. They reached the farmer's field. The field was as green as ever and not a plant was broken. Everybody was surprised. The farmer thought it was magic. They were all wondering when Rai Bular said, "But where's the boy?" Everybody began to look for the Guru. They sought him here, there and everywhere. But they could not find him. The sun was very hot and they were tired. So they thought of taking some rest under a tree. They were even more surprised to find the Guru sleeping there. The shade of the tree had moved round away from him but a snake was giving shade to the Guru's face. Everybody prayed for the Guru's life. They were very afraid. Their noise made the Guru wake up. The snake slipped away and the Guru got up. All came back to the village. From that day many people began to think that Nanak was 'a man of God.'
