In the Old Testament, people lived to great ages, but only if they were of specific interest to the Hebrew tradents. There is no suggestion that pharaohs or others lived longer than normal lives. Although Moses is credited with living to a great age, the Book of Exodus tells us that a mere forty years was sufficient time to ensure that every adult who left Egypt was dead before the Israelites entered the Promised Land. The extraordinary good fortune of the biblical heroes is due to more than good DNA - not one of them ever died in warfare or from famine, misadventure or disease.
The greatest age reported in the Old Testament is that of Methuselah. Interestingly, Methuselah had his first son at the age of 187, which is 11 X 17, and died at the age of 969, which is 57 X 17.
It may seem that all the important people of Genesis were destined to die at ages marked by a formula based on the magical number 17. The first five generations in The Bible were remarkably similar in this respect:
Adam ........ 930 years (7 X 9 + 51 X 17)
Seth .......... 912 years (5 X 9 + 51 X 17)
Enos ......... 905 years (8 X 9 + 49 X 17)
Cainan ...... 910 years (6X10 + 50 X 17)
Mahalalel . 895 years (5 X 9 + 50 X 17)
Although shorter lifespans are attributed to the Patriarchs, they are even more interesting:
1. Abraham lived to 175 (5 X 5 X 7)
2. Isaac lived to 180 (6 X 6 X 5)
3. Jacob lived to 147 (7 X 7 X 3)
Furthering the above formulas, Genesis says Sarah lived to 127 years, which is the sum of these consecutive square numbers plus 17.
