A papacy usually ends with the pope's confirmed death, so Benedict XVI could be pope until the day he dies. He can, however, resign his office (Code of Canon Law 332 §2), and this is an option he he chose, announcing on the 11th of February 2013 that he would be resigning on the 28th of February 2013.
