How long was Samson's hair in the Bible?

In the book of Judges chapter 13 verse 5 you can read of the fortelling of the birth of Samson. "For behold you shall concaive and bear a son. And no razor shall come upon his head." As the first part of the verse states. And again in chapter 16 verse 17 it is recorded the no razor has ever come upon his head.

The hair and the vow of a Nazarite was one that was a sacrifice and not to be used as a fashion statement or fad.

Scripture says the children of Israel were to poll their heads. The hair could neither be long nor short. Just in between.

Samson's hair probably caused him ridicule by the children of Israel. It was the length of a woman's.

His mandated avoidance of alcohol probably meant he could never go to any form of party or function with his friends while growing up. In today's society he would have been "the religious kid" and subject to ridicule by his own people who were not commanded to abstain from alcohol.

Also, seeing how the Philistine's put so much emphasis on finding out the secret of his strength he may very well have been a small scrawny man. If he was muscular they would not have been surprised by his strength.

Samson's hair was long because he was a 'Nazirite', which means: "One Singled Out; Dedicated One; Separated One". His hair was an outward sign of his Nazirite standing with God...(Judges 13:1-5, 24)(Numbers 6:2&5)

(Judges 16:17 NAV) "...So he told her all that was in his heart and said to her, "A razor has never come on my head, for I have been a Nazirite to God from my mother's womb. If I am shaved, then my strength will leave me and I will become weak and be like any other man..." (Hebrews 11:32-33)

The Bible tells us that Samson had long hair that he never allowed to be cut, because his incredible strength came from his hair. He knew that if his hair was ever cut, he would lose his strength.

Another view is that the story of Samson evolved out of a much earlier myth of the sun god. In the ancient Near East, the sun god was often represented with long hair around his head, just as the sun is sometimes represented even today. Of course, the sun god takes on human form, while remaining a deity with great powers, and this view is that Samson had once been the Hebrew sun god.
