There are about 41,000 different Christian denominations in five major 'families' of churches/communion. The percentages in brackets indicate the percent of the Christian population affiliated with each 'family' or group of denominations:

1. The Catholic Church [50%]
2. Historic Protestant and Anglican churches [18%]
3. The Eastern Churches (Orthodox, Oriental Orthodox, Church of the East) [12%]
4. Pentecostal churches [12%]
5. Evangelical (non-Pentecostal) [8%]

These later two categories include a number of "non-denominational" or independent congregations. All five, however, have a various number of 'sects' within them.

The first wave of "non-denominational" churches are in fact the third wave of the pentecostal movement. Other independent congregations tend to be evangelical, and while may not belong to a denomination per se, often do belong to various parachurch organizations or adhere to a common set of standards and beliefs with other similar evangelical churches.

Some megachurches, by engaging in 'church planting' set themselves up as a de facto denomination while maintaining the "non-denominational" title.

Counting denominiations is difficult for these reasons, and also because of the web of relationships between churches. For example, the Catholic Church is made up of 23 self-governing (sui iuris) churches worldwide; the Anglican Communion is made up of 38 self-governing provinces. Some surveys count each of these separately (so Church of England is one, The Episcopal Church is another) and some count them together (Anglicans).

There are about 40,000 different Christian denominations, though this counting includes national churches that are part of the same communion as 'different denominations' (for example, it counts Church of England and Episcopal Church as two, but both are part of the Anglican Communion).

They can be roughly split into five major "families":

1: The Catholic Church

2: Orthodox and other Eastern Churches

3: "Mainline" Protestant and Anglican Churches

4: Evangelical churches and movements

5: Pentecostal churches and movements

There are others that do not quite fit into any of these 'families', such as the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (Mormons) and the Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society (Jehova's Witnesses), or certain indigenous forms of Christianity.

This is by no means to lessen them, it is simply a statement that they are very unique; and don't have as much common ground with any other group.

However almost all of the vast number of denominations would fall under the category of evangelical protestant, many of which are almost completely identical to each other.

Roman Catholic AnswerThere are no Catholic denominations, it is impossible for there to be such a thing. When Our Blessed Lord established the Church, he was very clear: (St. John 10:16) "And other sheep I have, that are not of this fold: them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice, and there shall be one fold and one shepherd." As we say each Sunday in the creed, "I believe in One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church". This Church is the Mystical Body of Christ and His Bride. He can have only one Body, and one Bride; He appointed Peter and his successors to be His Vicars on earth, and sent the Holy Spirit to guide it into all truth. Where Peter is, there is the Church. Which means that anyone who separates from It, separates from the Body of Christ. There are NO denominations.

However, there are a number of different 'rites' within Catholicism, such as the Maronite and Ukrainian rites. All are doctrinally in line with the Latin (Roman) Church and are in union with the pope in Rome. They may celebrate the Mass and sacraments differently from the Latin Rite but all are valid. Also, as many members of the Episcopalian and Anglican Churches return to Catholicism they are frequently allowed to celebrate Mass and the Sacraments following their own traditions.
