The early persecution mainly took the form of laughing and sneering. Abu Lahab ("Uncle Rufus") interrupted and disrupted Mohammed's first public sermon. He then forced his sons to divorce Mohammed's daughters. Amr b al-Aas and Abdullah b al-Zibaari sang rude poems about Islam. Abu Lahab and Abu Sufyan demanded miracles and asked Mohammed to predict market prices. Abu Jahl ("Mr Stupid") verbally humiliated his Muslim relatives in front of the whole clan. Al-Nadr entertained crowds with Persian folk tales, then claimed: "Mohammed cannot tell a better story than I can, and [the Qur'an] is only old fables which he has copied, just as I have mine."

For a couple of years, the pagans stopped the Muslims worshipping at the Kaaba (Cube Temple). This was stopped by a big, socially powerful alpha male named Umar. After he became a Muslim, he fought off the Meccan aldermen who tried to block the Kaaba steps. Two Muslims, Saad and Hamza, became physically violent, after which the leading citizens of Mecca decided that each one would "deal with" the Muslims in his own family. One man locked up his son on bread and water, but relented when he realised that the young man really would rather die than renounce Islam. We also know the names of about a dozen Muslim slaves who were brutally attacked. Abu Jahl was particularly vicious and even killed one poor old lady. However, this was the only murder in the whole persecution. Another slave, Bilal, was pinioned under a rock on the hot desert sands and left to die; but he was rescued by Abu Bakr, who bought him by swapping him for one of his own pagan slaves.

In 616 the Meccan leaders agreed that nobody would trade or intermarry with Mohammed's family. This caused them significant economic hardship, but it did not suppress Islam. The alderman next tried flattery: they offered Mohammed women, money, political power and a good exorcist if only he would respect their gods. But he refused this offer too.

After Mohammed's powerful uncle died in 619, the pagans began to insult Mohammed personally. They threw dust at him in the street. Abu Lahab crept up behind him while he was praying and threw goat's entrails on his back. His wife dumped her household rubbish outside Mohammed's doorstep. Uqba b Abu Muayt also crept up behind Mohammed while he was praying, grabbed his cloak and tried to strangle him. Although Abu Bakr dragged Uqba away before any real harm was done, an eyewitness recalled this as "the worst act of hostility that anyone ever saw the Meccans show to Mohammed."

At this point, Mohammed started to make alliances with people from other tribes, and they swore a pact to fight the Meccans together. The Meccans found out and decided to evict or kill Mohammed. That is why Mohammed fled to Medina in 622.
