The word testament means, at root, a document containing testimony. The Gospels and letters are the testimony of the people who founded the Christian Church. Given this, from a Christian perspective, the older Hebrew Bible is older testimony about the acts of God prior to the time of Jesus. The naming is quite rational from a Christian perspective.

A Jewish person would consider it offensive because it could insinuate that that the Torah is no longer valid, having been replaced by something new (New Testament). Usually, Jews do not find the term Old Testament offensive, just inapt. As a result, the Jews prefer to say that they read the Tanakh than that they read the Old Testament.

There are many individuals in the Old Testament who could be considered evangelists as they spread the message of God, but the term "evangelist" is more commonly associated with the writers of the Gospels in the New Testament.
