How were the mormons able to make a home in the desert?

Most Mormons would answer that they were only able to survive because they were protected and guided by God. It was thought that the land was unsuitable for permanent settlement because the land was infertile and prone to extreme weather conditions, but the Mormon Pioneers made it a thriving habitable area by working together with thrift, ingenuity, diligence, and determination. They came up with ways to build buildings using very little wood or nails and dug irrigation ditches from mountain streams to water their crops. They also found which areas were good for producing different things and worked together to produce and trade goods with each other (for example, cotton and fruit grew well in southern Utah, central Utah was good for ranching and mining, northern Utah was more suitable for farming and dairies).
