John the Baptist baptized Jews by the thousands.

"John did baptize in the wilderness, and preach the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins." (Mark 1:4)

Baptism isn't a "Christian phenomenon"... it's an outward show of faithful repentance toward the Creator for having disobeyed His laws... which is what sin is - I John 3:4.

Jesus was baptized, not because He needed it, but as an example for us to do the same.

"...Repent, and be baptized EVERY ONE OF YOU in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit." (Acts 2:38)

Jewish answer:

Because he changed his religion. He preached a number of things that are not Judaism.
