The Old Testament says it is better the day you die, than the day you're born.
An end to suffering to some, and (some maintain) a cessation from that manner of sin whereby the more you do, the worse it shall be where you're going for others!
Perhaps things are better under the New Testament scheme of things.
Many, many martyrs. Nowhere did it say you HAD to die, only that some WOULD. All's it DID say, was that they sealed their testimonies with their blood (fact).
Some believed that if they recanted, that they would no longer go to heaven.
Doubtless, but what they hadn't heard of the belief: "once saved, always saved..." which is a definite belief of a goodly portion of Christian variants.
For these people (if they are correct) it wouldn't matter if they lied, recanted in order to stay alive. It would simply be a sin to be repented of at a later gate (I meant date, but I was thinking; shh until you get THRU' the gate...). Hmm.
Nevertheless, some of these also had other reasons for still yet telling the truth. A belief that you SHOULD tell the truth. A wish to go to heaven sooner (maybe more applicable during the Tribulation Period to come...). A desire to not disappoint their Lord. Bravery of the utmost kind etc.
Summing up then, I'd say a religion is only worth dying for if you absolutely know of a certainty that it's correct, and also that it's your Deity's will that it be so. Especially their perfect will.

The meaning of worth dying for is saying that you would die for something. It is saying that you like it enough or it is worth your life. There is a Christian Rock band that are good family friends to us called Worth Dying For and the name of the band is that because God is worth dying for. So when you say something is "worth dying" or "worth dying for" you are saying you would die for that. Hope that helps (:
