There are so many notions of the angel of death that it is hard to know which one this question is really about.

Perhaps the first actual mention of an angel of death arose among the Jewish rabbis early in the Common Era, when they began to teach that two antagonistic spirits inhabit each individual, one a tendence to good (yetser-ha-tob) and the other a tendency to evil (yetser-ha-ra). The rabbis argued that the Lord had created both tendencies, but gave humanity the Law to follow. At this point in Jewish theodicy, the Devil was seen as a personification of the yetser-ha-ra, and Rabbi Simon ben Lakish wrote, "Satan and the angel of death are one." Religious fashions change and, with them, ideas about the angel of death.

In Roman Catholicism, the archangel Michael is sometimes perceived as the angel of death, a very much different concept to the rabbinical one.

Whether any of these concepts is really true depends on which religion you follow and what you wish to believe.
