mental illness
Not necessarily mental. But it probably does show that that person has not matured properly. It may also be a sign of insecurity or control issues caused by abuse while growing up. And there are some who might say it is an indication of demonic possession or demonic influence. It is definitely not someone allowing God's influence in their life.
The early Christians believed that evil spirits or demons often entered humans. In fact they believed that mental illness and even sicknesses were caused by possession by evil spirits. However, we now know conclusively that mental illnesses and unusual behaviour are not caused by spirits. In spite of this, belief in possession by evil spirits has not entirely died out, and a few people sometimes still take part in "exorcisms" to drive out evil spirits. What is important is that mental illness is not the 'fault' of the sufferer, and it is not something caused by demons. It is simply an illness that can be treated, with proper medical help. It seems unlikely that the Christian God would punish a person for having an illness, through no fault of his or her own.
Most, if not all, mental illness (as opposed to emotional disorders) is caused by chemical imbalances in the brain, or by structural anomalies.
The impact and outcome of religion on mental health have been highlighted. ... The creation of the universe does not in any manner affect the integrity of Brahman.[2] ... ages most mental disorders were considered as witchcraft or demonic possession. ... People may pray more while they are sick or under stressful situations.
The Bible mentions demonic possession as a real phenomenon where evil spirits take control of a person's body or mind. It is portrayed as a spiritual battle between good and evil forces. Individuals affected by demonic possession may experience physical and mental torment, leading to spiritual distress and separation from God. The Bible emphasizes the importance of seeking spiritual protection and deliverance through prayer, faith, and reliance on God's power to overcome demonic influences.
Hippocrates viewed mental illness to be caused by the humors. Mania was understood to be caused by an excess of hot yellow bile, melancholy (or depression) was understood to be caused by an excess of sticky thick black bile, and schizophrenia was understood to be caused by an excess of cold mucous. Unlike earlier tribal or agrarian societies, Hippocrates believed that mental illness had physiological causes. People with mental illness were understood by Hippocrates to be suffering from an illness, rather than having exhibiting symptoms because they were being punished for something they had done or would do.
