Is the Joseph mention in the book of Genesis the same Joseph mention in the book of Matthew?

There are at least four Joseph's worth noting in The Bible. Joseph, son of Rachel, Jacobs second wife. (Gen. 22-24). Joseph, son of Heli and the husband of Mary. (Matt. 1-16). Joseph of Arimathaea and Joseph called Barssaba one of the two men chosen as fit to take the place of Judas.

However, there are connections with a lot of these characters, as Joseph was a picture of Christ, as He was chosen by His Father and given this great coat, though he did not deserve it any more than his brothers did, or at least, that is what he thought at the time. Also, Joseph was sold by his brothers into the enemy's hands, as Christ was sold by one of his disciples for 30 piece of silver to the Romans. The first Joseph was a picture of Christ, but the second one was the step father of the Messiah, whom the first Joseph emulated.

There are also 2 Johns, 2 Sauls (one a king, and the other a soon-to-be missionary named Paul), and also, Jesus was supposedly, a common name in Israel at His time, though that is speculation.

One of the main things we learn about Jacob early on is that he has a brother called Esau.

The passage in Matthew 1 begins with the verse

• Mal 1:2 I have loved you, saith the LORD. Yet ye say, Wherein hast thou loved us? Was not Esau Jacob's brother? Saith the LORD: yet I loved Jacob,

So yes, it is the same person.

Another answer:There are two Jacobs mentioned in Jesus' genealogy in Matthew 1.

Matt. 1:2 - Abraham begot Isaac, Isaac begotJacob, and Jacob begot Judah and his brothers.

This is the Jacob of Genesis; the son of Isaac and brother of Esau.

Matt. 1:15, 16 - Eliud begot Eleazar, Eleazar begot Matthan, and Matthan begot Jacob. And Jacob begot Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus who is called Christ.

This is another Jacob; the father of Joseph, the (supposed) father of Jesus.
