Depending on how it is used, it can be. There is no such thing as the "Mormon" church. The real name of the Church is the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Church members are supposed to be called "Latter-day Saints", not Mormons. However, the nickname Mormon was given to them over 100 years ago and has since been adopted into everyday use. The Church itself has began to use that title in it's public relation efforts (such as in it's informational website, Mormon.org) because they realize that is the common term. Since the proper term is "Latter-day Saint", not "Mormon", you could classify it as a slang.

However, Mormon is also a person. When a member of the Church refers to Mormon, they are referring to an ancient prophet who compiled the Book of Mormon. In that way, it is not a slang, it is a proper name.
