The biblical authors were more accurate in their use of words than some of our Bible translators . There are two Greek words for the abode of the dead. (Greek is the language in which the New Testament of the Bible was originally written.) Hell (Geennain Greek, also called the lake of fire and the eternal fire) was made for the Devil and his minions (Matthew 25:41) and will be occupied by all the unrighteous after the last judgement (Revelation 19:20-21 and 20:10-15). There is no biblical evidence that anyone has gone there or will go there until after Jesus' Second Coming (Revelation 19:11-16). This includes Jesus Himself.

The other Greek word is Hadas (from which we get the English word Hades). This is the region of the dead. Before Jesus' ascension, the spirits of all people went to Hades. The reference there is in relation tho those who had been held on the other side of the great gulf fixed (often referred to has hell from the account of Lazarus and the Rich man - Luke 16). Here is the idea, Christ did not show up until 2 thousand years ago. Therefore it would have not been fair to all those who came before Christ in the flesh if they had not had the same opportunity as we have (salvation), therefore Christ went and preached to them who were in prison as it is stated in 1st Peter Chapter 3

Christ died (Romans 6:8/Revelation 1:18)with 'evil doers'(Mark 15:27/Luke 22:37 ) and was buried in a 'grave'('buriel place')(1 Corinthians 15:3+4/Matthew 27:60+61/Isaiah 53:9) for parts of three days.

The confusion arrises when different versions of the Bible, translate this term for 'grave' differently. A prophecy about the death of the coming Messiah can be found at Psalm 16:10 where:

-The King James Bible says:"For thou wilt not leave my soul in hell; neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption."

-The New International Version translates this as: "...you will not abandon me to the realm of the dead, nor will you let your faithfulone see decay."

-The American Standard version: "For thou wilt not leave my soul to Sheol; Neither wilt thou suffer thy holy one to see corruption."

-The Common English version says:"because you won't abandon my life to the grave;

you won't let your faithful follower see the pit."

Jesus did infact go to 'Hades'(Gk)('Sheol' (Hb) after his execution, because He died. He was in the grave for parts of three days, as prophesied by Jonah's experience with the big fish (Matthew 12:40/Matthew 16:21/Matthew 17:23/Luke 24:46/Matthew 27:63) completely reliant on his father for the resurrection(1 Peter 1:3/Acts 2:31+33/Acts 3:15/1 Corinthians 15:4).
