A common misconception is that the term witness means to see something. However, the term witness means to bear testimony. Jehovah's Witnesses bear testimony about Jehovah's sovereignty, His son, Jesus Christ, and the Good News about God's Kingdom, with Jesus Christ as it's now-reigning king, and the blessings for mankind that the kingdom is soon to bring. This testimony stems from a challenge spoken of in The Bible book of Isaiah in chapter 43, verses 9 & 10 where the nations of the earth are told to furnish proof of their point of view regarding worship or acknowledge that Jehovah is the true God. According to the New World Translation of the Holy Scriptures Isa 43:9,10 says: "Let the nations all be collected together at one place, and let national groups be gathered together. Who is there among them that can tell this? Or can they cause us to hear even the first things? Let them furnish their witnesses, that they may be declared righteous, or let them hear and say, ‘It is the truth!’” “YOU are my witnesses,” is the utterance of Jehovah, “even my servant whom I have chosen, in order that YOU may know and have faith in me, and that YOU may understand that I am the same One. Before me there was no God formed, and after me there continued to be none." So, based on the above scripture, the ancient nation of Israel once enjoyed the privilege of being witnesses for Jehovah. However, due to their lack of faith as a nation, Jesus told them at Mt 21:43: "The kingdom of God will be taken from YOU and be given to a nation producing its fruits." That nation proved to be a spiritual nation rather than another literal, fleshly nation. Please note these words of Acts 15:13,14:“Men, brothers, hear me. Sym′e·on has related thoroughly how God for the first time turned his attention to the nations to take out of them a people for his name." And 1 Peter 2:9,10: "But YOU are “a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for special possession, that YOU should declare abroad the excellencies” of the one that called YOU out of darkness into his wonderful light.?For YOU were once not a people, but are now God’s people; YOU were those who had not been shown mercy, but are now those who have been shown mercy."
Simply put, we are witnesses of Jehovah, that He is the one true God.We also tell people that Jehovah would like as many people as possible to listen to the good news that we preach, that good news being that Jehovah will very soon take action to vindicate his name at Armageddon. This will be a decisive war in which He will completely destroy those who refuse the opportunity to come over onto his side.

Because jehovahs witnesses are pacifist and therefore anti military and therefore do not believe that a person that participated in the military deserves to be honored.
