The Five Pillars of Islam are the essential practices and/or duties incumbent on every Muslim. These duties are Shahadah (profession of faith), Salat (prayers), Zakat (giving of alms), Sawm (fasting) and Hajj (pilgrimage).

Shahadah is a profession of monotheism and statement making clear the acceptance of Allah as the one true deity.

Salat is the requirement to pray 5 times a day at the recommended times. This is typically done on a rug facing the Kaaba in Mecca. It is a communication time with Allah and a time to express gratitude.

Zakat is the practice of giving charitably from accumulated wealth to help the poor and the needy. There is a 2.5% accepted rate but more is certainly welcome.

Sawm or Siyam includes several types of fasting of which ritual fasting is more common and obligatory. Here Muslims are not allowed to eat, drink, or have sex from dawn to dusk during the month of Ramadan. This is a time to atone for sins and to try and become a better person by being conscious of sins and other desires.

Hajj is the traditional pilgrimage made to Mecca which every able-bodied Muslim must complete sometime within their lifetime if possible.
The 'Five Pillars' of Islam are the foundation of Muslim life: 1)Faith or belief in the Oneness of God and the finality of the prophethood of Muhammad; 2)Establishment of the daily prayers; 3)Concern for and almsgiving to the needy; 4)Self-purification through fasting; and. 5)The pilgrimage to Makkah for those who are able.
