What are some reasons that Islam is misunderstood by many people?

Islam is misunderstood because most people judge Islam by the actions of its followers. The actions of the people who claim to follow Islam may not be in accordance with the teachings of Islam. Hence, through lack of contact and violent acts of a few of these misguided practitioners being broadcast in the media, most of us form bad preconceptions of this minority.

mT--> Sometimes, we just need to take every blame for our actions. We Muslims misinterpreted Islam, and the non-muslims misunderstood it. Even these days, the so called muslim youths are misunderstanding Islam. This is sad and scary. Its very obvious that if we keep introducing stuff to this perfect religion in order to blend in, we'll pay the price. In fact, we are paying the price. I'm just scared of this issue getting worse. So, to answer the question, the reason Islam is misunderstood by many people is because WE MUSLIMS ARE NOT DOING OUR BEST BEST TO REP ISLAM WELL. WE HAVE TO REPRESENT ON EVERY LEVEL. WE HAVE TO BE PROUD OF ISLAM AND CARRY THIS HONOR WITH PRIDE AND TREAT IT LIKE AN EGG.Every Religion has gone through rough times. It's there in History, PLEASE RESEARCH ON THIS. This might just be history repeating itself. We need to KNOW THIS, STAY FIRM, and PRAY HARD. Good days are ahead, if God wills.

There is a lot of people who do not understand the true Islam, Islam is a religion of tolerance and compassion and helped others.

And probably people do not understand the true Islam because of some bad deeds that is doing some Almkhbayn people who have personal interests, these acts do not represent Islam but represents people who doing it

First of all, I want to give you some reasons but they can not be generalized:

1. The Media, especially those channels or papers dominated by Its enemies.

2. Stereotyping Muslims .

3. Prejudging Islam & consequently taking It as an enemy without even knowing It.

4. Gaps between followers of all religions & the lack of the productive respectful dialogues between a lot of them.

5. Misinformation: because what will you be informed about Islam if you ask Its enemies about It?!!! nothing except false accusations, lies & slanders!

Unfortunately, there are sites on the internet found just to fight It without realizing that they are in the first place against themselves plus their misleading to the people & letting them hate such a great peaceful religion.

What is very amazing about Islam is the fact that it's served even by Its enemies, many people converted to Islam after such attacks!! no wonder, It's all God's act.

we always assure the importance of eliminating all gaps between followers of different beliefs, in the purpose of the happiness & harmony of all humans.

- Allah is just the Arabic word for God. Muslims worship the same God of Christians & Jews.

- Muslims are very strong monotheists & they worship none but Allah, the only one God, the Creator of all, the matchless, the most Glorious.

- Crescent and star is the Islam religious symbol

* Correction:

- This is not true. There is no religious symbol for Islam religion as the cross in Christianity or David star in Judaism

- Islam is against democracy

* Correction:

- This is not correct. Islam calls Muslim to follow democracy. It is called in Islam "Shoura" or consultation. Even in the time of prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) consulted his followers in many issues that relevant to their daily lives.

Islam is a widely misunderstood religion mainly because of Propaganda.

For example, many people believe 'jihad' is blowing yourself up for the sake of Islam. This fact is totally false. Jihad actually means 'to struggle': you can be doing jihad while studying for a particularly hard test.

Islam is also stained by Muslim extremists. What most people fail to see is that there are extremists in EVERY religion. Plus, people should not blame the whole Islamic community for the actions of one person.

People also scorn women for the way they dress (loose clothing with a head scarf). They dress that way for modesty. It is also obligatory in Islam to do so and most women do wear by their own choice. It is true that some parents force their daughters to wear the scarf-- and this act is absolutely forbidden in Islam. Islam does not ask parents to use force on their children.

Contrary to what most people think, woman can also choose who they marry and are not supposed to be forced by their parents to marry a certain guy.

People misunderstand Islam because they do not understand its rules and believe instead the lies of the propaganda. Islam is a peaceful religion-- and Muslims are people just like me or you.
