In Islam, men and woman have very distinct roles. Allah (God) says that it is the job of the man to provide for his family, and it is the job of the woman to raise the children. This does not mean that a woman can't work or have money. It also does not mean that the man cannot take a hand in raising the children. In our religon, when a man makes money it is for the family, as in food, clothes, bills etc. When a woman earns money, it is for her and whatever she desires. It is not her responsibility to provide for the family. If she chooses to, then that is her personal desicion. If she chooses not to, she is not At Fault.

In Islam, raising the children means teaching them good character, showing them what's right and wrong, nurturing them. It is possible to do all these thing and work at the same time, though women are reminded that they are not required to work.
In an Islamic marriage, men are required to provide and woman are required to teach and nurture. Everything else that they do is extra, or icing on the cake so to speak. As long as men and women fufill their goals, nothing stops them from pursuing something else.
