What are the differences between the interiors of Anglican and Catholic church buildings?

Catholic AnswerHaving been an Anglican in my youth, and realizing how much alike certain branches of the Anglican church are, and how desperately we wanted to believe that we were still part of the One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic church it is difficult to accept that there is only one Catholic Church and that the Anglicans are, indeed, another Protestant manifestation in breaking away from Rome in the sixteenth century when Luther and Calvin were doing the same on the continent. The Anglican church stayed closer, in ritual, to its Catholic roots, but lost Apostolic succession when they lost the idea that the Mass was a sacrifice and subsequently changed their ordination ceremony and lost Orders. So, the difference is the same as any Protestant church, they determined that they knew better than the Body of Christ and separated from It. There are remarkable similarities in the way they are set up with Bishops, parishes, dioceses, etc. And their Communion service was a fairly close translation from the Mass.

Jesus guaranteed to be with His church until the end of time, and prayed that It would be One. Believing in His promise we note that breaking away from the Catholic church at any point, sooner or later, results in more fragmentation as, in breaking away from the One, Holy, Catholic church, they lose Christ's guarantee and break into more and more different and differing denominations. Currently, there are more than 120 different "Anglican" churches which are not even in communion with "The Anglican Church" (see web page). It is a sad situation which happens over and over again once leaving the Catholic church.

Generally speaking there isn't much difference in the interiors. They are especially similar in the United States and in Britain. Both churches have altars at the front. Most Anglican and Catholic Churches have stained glass windows, Stations of the Cross on the Wall, Kneelers, and a generally are more ornate and decorative than what you see in Protestant Churches. I think that Catholic Churches are slightly more ornate in some cases. You will also normally see a statue or mural of the Virgin Mary featured prominently in Catholic churches, also there will often be confessionals at the back of Catholic Santuaries which are not present in Anglican Churches. To someone unfamiliar with either Church though, the interiors would look very similar. Hope that helps

The Anglican Church was formed when Henry VIII wanted to divorce his wife for political reasons and the pope said no. Because this split was more political than theological, there are still a lot of similarities between Anglicans and Catholics. Both believe in the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus. Both believe in his Real Presence in the Eucharist. Both have all 7 sacraments. The Masses are extremely similar, almost identical. There are a few differences, however:

1. Authority of the Pope - Catholics believe the pope is infallible when speaking with the authority of Peter on religious matters. Obviously Anglicans don't. Also, the Pope has greater authority over the Catholic Church than the Archbishop of Canterbury has over the Anglican one. Anglican Laymen have a more prominent voice in Church decisions than their Catholic counterparts.

2. Divorce - Anglicans recognize it and allow remarriage. Catholics believe divorce is not religiously possible and therefore remarriage would be a sin.

3. Contraception and Abortion - Anglicans have no problem with contraception, Catholics believe only in natural family planning. Anglicans permit abortion in the case of rape or incest or when the mother's life is in danger. Catholics see abortion as the murder of an infant whatever the circumstances.

4. Clergy - Anglicans permit women clergy and there is debate about homosexual clergy as well; Catholics permit neither.

5. Mary - Catholics believe in the Immaculate Conception (Mary was born without sin) and the Assumption (when she died, she rose bodily into heaven). Anglicans are permitted to believe or not believe in these doctrines as they see fit.
