When someone talks about "Mormons", they are almost always referring to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which is by far the largest branch of the Mormonism movement, based in Salt Lake City Utah and claiming nearly 16 million (16,000,000) members worldwide. Also called the LDS Church, it is often called the "mainstream" Mormon church to distinguish it from other branches of Mormonism. Many other churches have come out of the LDS Church over the years, claiming that it's leadership has strayed. The largest of these is the Community of Christ(formerly the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints or RLDS) which claims about 250 thousand (250,000) members worldwide and is headquartered in Missouri. The Community of Christ grew out of a dispute over who should be the leader of the church after the death of it's founder, Joseph Smith. Many other groups exist or have existed, and there are also many who call themselves "independent Mormons" that do not claim membership in any officially established sect. Islam
There may be more than 70 sects among the Muslims. However, the basic belief of all the sects are the same. There may be difference in interpretation.
Islam is not a sect. It is a religion, which contains sects.Members of the Islamic religion are called Muslim. The major Muslim sects are Khawarij, Shi'a and Sunni. Each of those sects have sects.
It depends where in the world you are focusing? (Asia, North America, Isanbul???) In America you saw the genesis of many different christian sects such as mormonism, jehovahs witnesses, seventh day adventists.
Mormonism is more accurately described as a religious movement, as there are several different denominations, sects, and churches which would claim to be "Mormon" or part of the Mormonism movement. These churches all claim to be the proper continuation or authorized reorganization of the church established by Joseph Smith in 1830.The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (or LDS) is commonly called the "Mormon church" and is what most people think of when they hear the word Mormon. The LDS church is considered a denomination, as it is an organization of about 30,000 congregations worldwide. The LDS church is the largest denomination in the Mormonism movement.
