If you can find Foxes Book of Martyrs (John Fox) on the net you will have an excellent history of the early persecuted Christian church. The book is relatively cheap and was written in the 1500's but it is still today one of the best records of suffering Christians. Be warned...it is heavy reading (I would say R-rated/ Australian standards) and some of the deaths in the book considerably horrible. You will need a strong stomach.
