If you can find Foxes Book of Martyrs (John Fox) on the net you will have an excellent history of the early persecuted Christian church. The book is relatively cheap and was written in the 1500's but it is still today one of the best records of suffering Christians. Be warned...it is heavy reading (I would say R-rated/ Australian standards) and some of the deaths in the book considerably horrible. You will need a strong stomach.

There are not punishments of Christianity (except for the part where if you're a christian in the middle east, and some other countries in Asia, they will kill you). although if you aren't a christian when you die you go to hell where you will burn and be tortured for all of eternity without end. so i hope you're a christian because i strongly recommend it

Most of the evidence known to us sugests that the first-century Romans largely ignored the Christians, believing them to be simply a sect of Jews. It is true that Nero expelled Christians from Rome on the probably spurious grounds that they were responsible for the Great Fire of Rome. The second-century historian, Tacitus, who is well-known for his dislike of Nero, tells us that Nero committed various atrocities against the Christians of Rome, but there is nothing in the early records to suggest Nero persecuted any Christians outside Rome. Around 112 CE, Pliny the Younger asked Emperor Trajan for advice about the treatment of Christians apparently because, throughout his career to date, he was unaware of any punishment of Christians. The emperor replied that Christians were not to be sought out for punishment, and if they came to court they were to be given the opportunity to clear themselves by formal denial, no matter how compromising their previous conduct may have been – so long as they also offer up the required prayers to the Roman Gods.

The Romans were not blameless, but at no time were Christians persecuted as savagely as later Christian authors were to claim. Edward Gibbon (The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire) says that Christian writers in the fourth or fifth century "ascribed to the magistrates of Rome the same degree of implacable and unrelenting zeal which filled their own breasts against the heretics or the idolaters of their own times." We go forward even to the sixteenth century, to find books still being written about lurid events of which the authors could not have had any real knowledge. The reality is that few first-century Christians were punished for their beliefs and that those who were punished were not treated worse than ordinary criminals.
