God promised David an eternal kingdom. This is interpreted as being fulfilled through the Messiah. 2 Samuel 7:16.
And thine house and thy kingdom shall be established for ever before thee: thy throne shall be established for ever.
God promised David that his descendants throne will endure forever. But the Davidic line of Kings ended with Zedekiah.
Psalm 89
[34] My covenant will I not break, nor alter the thing that is gone out of my lips.
[35] Once have I sworn by my holiness that I will not lie unto David.
[36] His seed shall endure forever, and his throneas the sun before me.
[37] It shall be established for ever as the moon, and as a faithful witness in heaven. Selah.
Of course, as with many things in The Bible it is important to understand both the meaning and the context. The promise of an eternal kingdom does not relate to an unbroken line of kings, but to a spiritual kingdom which will nevertheless be unending. David's legacy despite his faults was that he had a heart which was repentant and sought God. Such people form part of God's eternal kingdom which has never ended.
Much also, in terms of fulfillment remains to happen in the future, as other aspects of the covenant are put into place.
