When Jesus was brought to the temple as a baby, a man named Simeon recognized him as the Messiah.
Depending on which source(s) you consider, Simeon was a "just and devout" man of Jerusalem who was promised by God that he would be able to see the Lord's Christ before he (Simeon) died. He was inspired to go to the temple, and it was there that he met Mary and Joseph and the infant Christ. He is supposed to have blessed them and given thanks to God for this dispensation. Luke 2 holds this story.

In Luke 2:22 Mary and Joseph take Jesus to the temple to present Him to the Lord.There was a man in the temple by the name of Simeon. The Holy Spirit had revealed to him that he would see the Lord's Christ before he died. He recognized Jesus as that Messiah.Then in verse 36 we are introduced to Anna, a prophetess who lived in the temple night and day praying. She also saw Jesus and spoke to the Lord and gave Him thanks for the Messiah Jesus.
This man's name was Simeon.The story is told in Luke 2:25-35. In verse 25 it reads ... "and behold, there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon, and this man was just and devout, waiting for the Consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him, and it had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not die until he had seen the Lord's Christ and in v.28 it tells how Simeon took the baby Jesus up in his arms and blessed God.....
