'This cup.' - The words appear in Matthew 26:39 -
"And he went a little farther, and fell on his face, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou [wilt]."
This cup was the cup of the wrath of God for the punishment of the sins of the whole world which Jesus drank for our sakes - "For he hath made him [to be] sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him." (2 Corinthians 5:21). He then went willingly to the cross.
Matthew 26:36 Then Jesus came with them to a place called Gathsemane, and He told the disciples, "Sit here while I go over there and pray." HCSB
He wasn't there - he'd gone off to betray Jesus.
The Garden of Gethsemane was a place located on the Mount of Olives that Jesus often resorted to for prayer and communion with His Father. Just before Judas' betrayal and nearing the time of His crucifixion, Jesus travelled to Gethsemane with His disciples so that He could pray. While Jesus was praying, His disciples fell asleep. The entire account can be found in Matthew 26:36-45, Mark 14:32-41, and Luke 22:39-46. Matthew 26:36 "Then cometh Jesus with them unto a place called Gethsemane, and saith unto the disciples, Sit ye here, while I go and pray yonder." Matthew 26:40 "And he cometh unto the disciples, and findeth them asleep, and saith unto Peter, What, could ye not watch with me one hour?"
Peter, James and John
The Garden of Gethsemane, on the Mount of Olives near Jerusalem, was the place where Jesus and the Disciples went following the Last Supper on Maundy Thursday. Matthew 26:36 and Mark 14:32 tell of Jesus asking the Disciples to watch and pray while he went aside to pray alone. It was also in Gethsemane where the texts say Judas led solders for Christ's betrayal and arrest.
The three apostles who were with Jesus at Gethsemane were Peter, James and John. See Matthew 26:37.Answer /Peter, John son of Zebedee, and James son of Zebedee.
Jesus took Peter, James, and John with him to watch and pray with him. Three times Jesus prayed that, if it be possible, the cup of suffering might be taken from him. While Jesus prayed for this possibility, he affirmed that if it wasn't possible, he wanted to do the Father's will.
While Jesus prayed in the Garden of Gethsemane, Peter, James, and John fell asleep. Despite Jesus asking them to stay awake and support him in prayer, they succumbed to exhaustion and were unable to keep watch. This moment highlights the disciples' human weakness and the intense emotional burden Jesus was experiencing.
In the Bible, it is written that Simon Peter cut off the ear of a Roman soldier named Malchus while trying to protect Jesus from being arrested in the Garden of Gethsemane.
After the Lord's supper was instituted in the upper room Jesus took the remaining 11 disciples to Gethsemane and then He took Peter, James, and John with Him a short distance from the others and there he had them wait while He Himself went another short distance to pray. This can be found in Mark 14:32-35; Matthew 26:36-39.
