I don't think he was afraid of any thing.
Catholic AnswerBefore his apostasy, Martin Luther was morbidly afraid of going to hell, as a matter of fact, by his own admission, that was one of the reasons he entered the Augustinian Friary, he promised God if he wasn't killed during a thunder storm, he would enter religious life. So, we can say that he was mortally afraid of lighting and thunder, as well. Martin Luther spent most of his religious life obsessing about whether he was good enough. Unfortunately, instead of praying, confessing his sins, and following the rule, he finally came up with his own answer which was - it didn't matter WHAT he did, God would save him anyway. This pat answer made his entire ridiculous religion completely implausible, but, for some strange reason, the rulers in northern Germany went with it in an effort to free themselves from what they thought was Roman oppression. After that, Martin Luther spend the remainder of his life as a good friend of his beer cellar, and didn't really have a care in the world - by his own admission. All of the above is from his own writings that he left us. Unfortunately his language is so atrocious that I can't quote him verbatim as the WikiAnswers computer will not allow that kind of language in a an answer.
