Buddhists are largely encouraged to follow their own path, albeit through common methods and sharing common goals. So there isn't one view on this subject common to all of Buddhism.

On a personal level courage is generally thought of as the ability to overcome fear. On the highest level of Buddhism fear is dissolved alongside hope, so it has no reality of itself so it is a construct, an artifical device of ego. However on the relative level courage is an essential part of being a Buddhist.
