The core instructions are called 'mitzvot' (commands) and are found in the Torah. Nearly everyone is familiar with the "10 Commandments", in the original Hebrew they are called "Asseret HaDibrot" which means "The Ten Statements". These injunctions were given to Moses by God while Moses met with the Lord for forty days on Mount Sinai. He then delivered the Statements to the children of Israel.
The 10 Statements are an introduction to the rest of the mitzvot. Tradition holds that there are 613 mitzvot in the Torah by which Jews are to live. They can be found primarily in the books of Leviticus and Deuteronomy.
NOTE: Some Jewish traditions believe that Moses received the entire Torah at Mount Sinai during his forty days there.
