Sufi is a master of tasawwuf. Tasawwuf is the science of Islam that deals with the inner being. It's goal is to purify the heart, and hence scholars of Islam call this science 'the heart of Islam.

Normally, a Muslim who wants to be a sufi becomes a student of a sufi master, who guides him on this path. Just like we have teachers for other subjects and science, we have teachers for tasawwuf as well. Some of the practises of the sufis that are commonly observed are dhikr of Allah in abundance, salawat upon the prophet peace unto him etc.

The term sufi was first coined during the time of the taabein, and before that it was plainly known as 'zuhd' i.e abstinence, and people of zuhd were called 'zaahid'.

Some fake claimants to tasawwuf have indulged in unislamic activities, and this happens when a person tries to practise tasawwuf without having the basic knowledge of Islamic Law. So the scholars have always written books on real tasawwuf, hence it is important to follow the way of the great scholars of the past. On the other hand, some Muslims seeing the wrong practises of some sufi claimants, and also due to their own ignorance of the divine law have tried to divorce tasawwuf from Islam, which of course is unacceptable to the orthodox Muslim.

The meaning of Sufi is hidden , the knowledge that is hidden from this world.......its a way to satisfy your spiritual thirst ,which goes beyond the regular five times namaz and fasting .first follow this perfectly and still you think u want more ,than go for sufi learning.......
