I am a "Canon" - so I should be able to answer the question! Actually, the word "canon" means "rule" - so a "canon" is someone who lives under a "rule".
Originally cathedrals were served by staffs of "canons" with assigned duties. As a Canon of St. Peter's Cathedral in Charlottetown, PEI, I am supposed to have an assigned seat in the Cathedral and duties that include celebration of the Eucharist, saying of Offices (Morning & Evening Prayer) and preaching of sermons. However, if I am an "Honorary Canon" - as are most canons in Canada - my specific duties have not been spelled out.
Usually Canons with the Dean of the Diocese constitute the "Chapter" of the Cathedral; however, the priest with "the cure of souls" at St. Peter's Cathedral has never been so designated because the Island has been attached to, then
incorporated into the Diocese of Nova Scotia (officially in 1999 - in response to an attempt in PEI to break free), which has its own cathedral in Halifax, N.S.
St. Peter's "Cathedral" is therefore an "anomaly" - neither a fully constituted "cathedral" nor a "parish Church" (i.e. with territorial boundaries).
