What does Islam think about fighting?

.Islam also teaches proper ethics in the situation of war. War is permissible in Islam, but only when other peaceful means such as dialogue, negotiations and treaties fail. It is a last resort and should be avoided as much as possible. Its purpose is not to convert people by force, or to colonize people or to acquire land or wealth or for self glory. Its purpose is basically: defense of life, property, land, honor and freedom for oneself as well as defense of others from injustice and oppression. War is a bad thing in Islam but if you have to do it as a religious duty as Jihad is recognized then you must go to war. The basic rules of war in Islam are: 1. Be strong so that your enemy fears you and should not attack you. 2. Do not begin the hostilities. Work for peace as much as possible. 3. Fight only those who fight, no collective punishment, non-combatants should not be harmed. Weapons of mass destruction should not be used. 4. Stop hostilities as soon as the other party incline to peace. 5. Observe the treaties and agreements as long as the enemy observe them. Allah says very clearly: Fight in the cause of Allah those who fight you, but do not do aggression, for Allah loves not the aggressors. (al-Baqarah 2:190)

The word "Islam" is related to the word "salam", which means "Peace". A Muslim is not allowed to initiate a war. "Fight in the way of God against those who fight against you, but begin not hostilities. Lo! God loveth not aggressors." (Chapter 2, Verse 190 of The Qur'an). The only time in which Muslims are allowed to take up arms are when they need to defend their own lives, the lives of their people, when they see the weak being oppressed, and when they are prohibited from practicing their religion. Islam makes a clear distinction between combatants and non-combatants. Soldiers are not allowed to hurt or harm the civilians, cut down trees, destroy livestock, wells, homes, or land of the enemy. Mutilation of the enemy bodies is also strictly forbidden. Prisoners of war are to be treated with kindness. They are to be fed the same food that is consumed by their captors. Muslims are forbidden to breach any treaty to which they have agreed. However, they are not expected to tolerate treachery. "And if thou fearest treachery from any folk, then throw back to them (their treaty) fairly. Lo! God loveth not the treacherous." (Chapter 8, Verse 58 of The Qur'an)

But just what are these limits? Chapter four of the book Human Rights in Islam by 'Allamah Abu al-'A'la Mawdudi is entitledThe Rights of Enemies at War. The author states:

Islam has first drawn a clear line of distinction between the combatants and the non-combatants of the enemy country. As far as the non-combatant population is concerned such as women, children, the old and the infirm, etc., the instructions of

the Prophet (Peace be upon him) are as follows:

"Do not kill any old person, any child or any woman" (Abu Dawud). "Do not kill the monks in monasteries" or "Do not kill the people who are sitting in places of worship" (Musnad of Ibn Hanbal).

During a war, the Prophet saw the corpse of a woman lying on the ground and observed: "She was not fighting. How then she came to be killed?" From this statement of the Prophet the exegetists and jurists have drawn the principle that those who are non-combatants should not be killed during or after the war.

The Prophet (Peace be upon him) also prohibited the killing of anyone who is tied or is in captivity.

These points are reinforced by other sayings of Prophet Mohammed (Peace be upon him) collected in The Book of Jihad and Expedition (Kitab Al-Jihad wa'l-Siyar)

It has been narrated on the authority of Abu Huraira that the Messenger of Allah (Peace be upon him) said: Do not desire an encounter with the enemy; but when you encounter them, be firm. - Muslim Book 019, Number 4313

It is narrated on the authority of 'Abdullah that a woman was found killed in one of the battles fought by the Messenger of Allah (Peace be upon him). He disapproved of the killing of women and children. - Muslim Book 019, Number 4319

It is narrated by Ibn 'Umar that a woman was found killed in one of these battles; so the Messenger of Allah (Peace be upon him)forbade the killing of women and children. - Muslim Book 019, Number 4320

Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him), the first caliph or successor to Prophet Mohammed (Peace be upon him) established a detailed set of rules for Islamic conduct in war. He gave these instructions to an Islamic army setting out for Syria, then still part of the Byzantine Empire:

"Stop, O people, that I may give you ten rules for your guidance in the battlefield. Do not commit treachery or deviate from the right path. You must not mutilate dead bodies. Neither kill a child, nor a woman, nor an aged man. Bring no harm to the trees, nor burn them with fire, especially those which are fruitful. Slay not any of the enemy's flock, save for your food. You are likely to pass by people who have devoted their lives to monastic services; leave them alone"

Islam, which is the religion followed by Muslims, is an Arabic word that means full submission to God. The root of the word in Arabic is 'Selm' that means peace. This means that Islam is the religion of peace and full submission to God that fulfills peace between one and himself.

Muslims are not allowed to start war. War is allowed for Muslims only in two cases:

1. to defend their lands, properties, or religion against attackers
2. to support people or countries who ask Muslim support against tyrants, oppressors or attackers.

Islamic law is the first law that puts rules for waging wars. Prophet Mohamed (peace be upon him) ordered his followers not to harm a child, a woman , a priest who worships god even if it was not our god, or a man who cannot or has no intention to fight. also not to cut a tree or kill an animal or burn a house or to disfigure a died person.

In the Quran, Holy book of Islam, God has said (meaning English Translation):

" God does not forbid you from showing kindness and dealing justly with those who have not fought you about religion and have not driven you out of your homes. God loves just dealers."(Quran, chapter 60, verse 8)

Even in time of war, Prophet Muhammad (peace upon him) used, in any military conflict, to prohibit soldiers from killing women, children, old people, or any civilian. He would advise them: {...Do not betray, do not be excessive, do not kill a newborn child.} And he also said: {Whoever has killed a person having a treaty with the Muslims shall not smell the fragrance of Paradise, though its fragrance is found for a span of forty years.}

Also, the Prophet Muhammad (peace upon him) listed murder as the second of the major sins (the first major sin is denying the oneness of God), and he even warned that on the Day of Judgment, {The first cases to be adjudicated between people on the Day of Judgment will be those of bloodshed.}
