But they hearkened not, nor inclined their ear, but walked in the counsels and in the imagination of their evil heart, and went backward, and not forward."
These are not the words modern believers would expect of a God who knew himself to the the only god in existence. God was saying that if the Israelites obeyed him, he would become their own God, to the exclusion of all other people on earth. Jeremiah says that the Israelites refused to accept this offer.
