Sol Invictus means the Invincible Sun. In the ancient Zoroastrian religion of Persia, Mithra was the spirit or archangel of the sun and of fire. Mithraism evolved within Persia as a religion separate from Zoroastrianism, worshipping Mithra as the sun god. This new religion travelled to the eastern Roman Empire, where it underwent further change to become a Roman religion, one which no longer reflected the ultimate supremacy of Ahura Mazda. In the Roman offshoot, Mithra was now called Mithras.
In the early centuries of the common era, the new religions, Christianity and Mithraism vied for converts from the traditional pagan religion. Mithraism further evolved, and Mithras became known as Sol Invictus, reflecting his role as the sun god. By the beginning of the fourth century, it is believed that the two religions each had the support of around ten percent of the Roman population. In his final showdown with his rival, Emperor Constantine sought the support of Christians in the army, while his rival had support from the followers of Sol Invictus.Following his victory, Constantine rewarded the Christian Church with state patronage, while Mithraism was strongly discouraged.
The birthday of Sol Invictus, or Mithras, had long been celebrated on 25th December, but until the fourth century there was no official birthday for Jesus. In 320, Emperor Constantine called the Christian Council of Nicaea to establish some common beliefs and formalities for the Church which had gained imperial patronage. One of the decisions of the Council was to make this date, 25th December, the official birhday of Jesus. Thus began the observance of Christmas.
