The Bible is at times religiously intolerant. The Old Testament frequently calls for the slaying of those who do not follow the national religion. Elijah is portrayed as killing numerous priests of the god Baal, and there are injunctions to kill 'witches' and others. Even the New Testament is intolerant in spite of the call to love your enemies, for example at Luke 19:27 Jesus says, "But those mine enemies, which would not that I should reign over them, bring hither, and slay them before me." This passage was used as an excuse in later centuries to kill anyone who would not be a Christian. Imagine if a new religion arose and placed Christians in this position!
Answer:
Neither the word "tolerant" nor "tolerance" is in the Bible.
Our Creator [Jesus Christ, the WORD and God of the Old Testament - John 1:3] commands His people, first and foremost, to worship GOD, ONLY -- "Thou shalt have no other gods before Me."
Nowhere does He even hint at any kind of acceptance of any other god or idolatrous representation of god [idols].
"For the Lord thy God is a consuming Fire, even a Jealous God [utterly unwilling to share or divide man's worship and devotion to any other; god, man or thing]. When thou shalt beget children, and children's children, and ye have remained long in the land [comfortable, blessed... and complacent - emphasis, mine], and shall corrupt yourselves, and make a graven image, or the likeness of any thing, and shall do evil in the sight of the Lord thy God, to provoke Him to anger... YE SHALL SOON PERISH FROM OFF THE LAND... YE SHALL NOT PROLONG YOUR DAYS UPON IT, but SHALL UTTERLY BE DESTROYED." (Deut.4:24-26)
"...beware lest thou forget the Lord... Thou shalt fear the Lord thy God, and serve Him, and shalt swear by His Name. Ye shalt NOT GO AFTER OTHER GODS, OF THE GODS OF THE PEOPLE WHICH ARE ROUND ABOUT YOU..." (Deut.6:12-14).
"Ye shall diligently keep the Commandments of the Lord your God, and His Testimonies, and His Statutes, which He hath commanded thee." (verse 17)
There is no tolerance with our Creator regarding man's worship of any other god... period. There is no discussion of it to the contrary in the Bible. Only Commandment to obey Him.
And when Jesus Christ, the "WORD of God" [Old Testament], came in the flesh... He mentioned not one word about other gods... but testified ONLY to His Father's Holy Name and Divine Authority over all creation.
And when Paul planted the Gentile churches round about... he declared other gods, religions and their idols as nothing:
"...the person who Truly Loves God is the one who is open to God's Knowledge. So now, what about it? Should we eat meat that has been sacrificed to idols? Well, we all know that an idol is not really a god, and that there is only One God, and no other. According to some people, there are a great many gods, both in heaven and earth. But WE KNOW THAT THERE IS ONLY ONE GOD, the Father, who created all things and made us to be His own; and ONE LORD JESUS CHRIST, who made everything and gives us Life." (I Cor.8:3-6 LVB Living Bible)
"So see to it that you obey Him who is speaking to you. For if the people of Israel did not escape when they refused to listen to Moses, the earthly messenger, HOW TERRIBLE OUR DANGER IF WE REFUSE TO LISTEN TO GOD WHO SPEAKS TO US FROM HEAVEN!
"When He spoke from Mount Sinai His voice shook the earth, but, 'Next time,' He says, 'I will not only shake the earth, but the heavens, too.' By this He means that He will sift out everything without solid foundations, so that only unshakable things will be left. Since we have a Kingdom nothing can destroy, LET US PLEASE GOD by serving Him with thankful hearts, and with Holy Fear and Awe. For our God is a Consuming Fire." (Heb.12:25-29 LVB)
"Religious tolerance" is the concept of blinded, deceived [politically correct] men, generations of whom since the beginning, have worshiped the god of this world and all of the vain, false, worthless gods and religions that he has given to men to divide and separate him from his Creator's Truth.
"You did not choose Me; I chose you! ...LOVE ONE ANOTHER! I AM ORDERING YOU TO DO THIS. If the people of the world hate you, remember THAT THEY HATED ME FIRST." (John 15:16-18 IEB International English NT)
The Bible reveals that it's MAN who is "tolerant" of all the religions and gods in the world -- except one. It reveals that the only God man has a problem "tolerating" is the One True God who made him and gave him Life.
