== 1 Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen... 3 Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear... 6 But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that comes to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him. Genesis 8:20 And Noah builded an altar unto the LORD; and took of every clean beast, and of every clean fowl, and offered burnt offerings on the altar. 8:21 And the LORD smelled a sweet savour; ... ;

; Exodus 20 : 24 : An altar of earth thou shalt make unto me, and shalt sacrifice thereon thy burnt offerings, and thy peace offerings, thy sheep, and thine oxen: in all places where I record my name I will come unto thee, and I will bless thee. Leviticus 1:17 ....., upon the wood that is upon the fire: it is a burnt sacrifice, an offering made by fire, of a sweet savour unto the LORD. ; Numbers 18 : 17-19 : Thou shalt sprinkle their blood upon the altar, and shalt burn their fat for an offering made by fire, for a sweet savour unto the LORD. In the context in which we live today, the Christian scriptures hold that the Old Testament sacrifices were part of a system which foreshadowed or pointed to the coming, once for all, sacrifice of Jesus Christ on the cross of Calvary. They were thus done away with at the moment of Jesus' death. This was symbolized by the rending of the thick temple curtain from top to bottom at that moment.

Thus, the sacrifices which were required by God in the Old Testament ceased to be relevant then. What changed was a shift from external ceremonies to inner attitudes of the heart, faith in Christ being the chief from which all other God-pleasing virtues flow, as in Hebrews 11:6 above.
