This is a reminder that one should not confuse a mental construct or a concept with the truth that it represents. This expression and others like it are found in the teachings of religions that claim the truth is beyond verbal explanation and even beyond mental construct. In these religions, symbols, poetry, art, lessons and practices are used to evoke an experience of the truth in the individual. In a way, the symbols and practices are merely tools that can be employed to bring a person closer to the religious or spiritual experience. On the other hand, symbols, practices, personages and rites may need to be held in high esteem in order for them to be effective as media of spiritual communications. A similar expression found in Buddhism admonishes the follower to not mistake the finger pointing at the moon for the moon itself.
