Following the gradual take-over of the subcontinent (United India) by the British, a royal British Army was assembled. The majority of the soldiers in this army consisted mostly of Hindus and Muslims.

When a new rifle was introduced, all soldiers of the army were to use it, however, there were rumours that the cartridge of the gun was lubricated with the grease of pigs, and cows. Now, a thing that needs to be understood is that the cartridge needs to be bitten off before being used. This was forbidden for Muslims as pork is not allowed for them and, unholy for the Hindus as cows were seen as a holy relic.
