In every religion, there are commandments about how to treat others. The best known is commonly called the "Golden Rule," and it tells us to treat other people as we would like to be treated. Some religions also tell us to speak kindly or respectfully about others. In the Hebrew Bible (called the Old Testament by Christians), we are told in the book of Leviticus that we must never gossip or spread stories about others; we are told to avoid "Loshon Hora" (evil speech). Many scriptures, including the Hebrew Bible, the New Testament, the Buddhist Sutras, and the Holy Qu'ran, say we should be forgiving of others and not speak in an angry or harsh manner. So, from the religious viewpoint, we are told that God does not want us to be cruel to other people, whether in our words or in how we treat them.
