It is about believing in one god and one god only: Allah (which is the Arabic word for god). Every Muslim follows the Qura'an (Allah's words) that has all the rules. In general they are: Do whatever you like as long as it doesn't hurt others (like killing, stealing, etc) and respect all forms of life especially fellow humans. Don't drink alcohol, eat pork, gamble, do drugs or have premarital sex or affairs (each has a logical reason for prohibiting, and science backs it up).

The Qur'an also has the forms of worship that Muslims may do to get to higher levels of heaven in the after life such as donating money to the poor, bonus fasting, bonus praying and simple things like feeding animals and smiling!

The five pillars of Islam is what differentiate practicing Muslims from non-practicing ones. They are Believing in Allah is the only god and that Muhammad is Allah's prophet, praying five times a day, fasting Ramadan, Zakat (giving a certain amount of money to the poor) and Pilgrimage (in Arabic: Hajj).
