What is a pagan or a wiccan?

Wicca is a facet of Paganism. Like Lutherans, Catholics and Seventh Day Adventists are Christians. The early practitioners of the Wiccan religion and of all Pagans in general were singled out and dubbed witches by the Roman Catholic Church and linked to devil worship. This was done in an effort to gain power, followers, acceptance and wealth. Thus today Wiccans and witchcraft have the negative connotations they do when in essence it was and is a religious system based on affinity with mother earth, use of herbs and other plants for various maladies and with groups of people combining their spiritual powers to effect changes or occurrences for the greater good.

Wiccan is the adjective for the religion Wicca. It is a nature-based religion. In Wicca, the major rule can be summarized by the phrase "Harm none." A true Wiccan is supposed to carefully consider every action and its consequences. Simply put, if an action can potentially hurt you or someone else, don't do it. This automatically prohibits lying, cheating, stealing, murdering, doing drugs, abusing, child pornography, suicide, and just about anything else generally accepted as wrong.

A pagan is someone who worships gods (or godesses) other than the Christian God. A Wiccan is a follower of Wicca, an ancient pagan religion of Nature Worship. They pay homage to the Mother Earth Goddess.

Pagans were people who lived in the countryside, at least that is what the Romans called them. Country folk were seen to be inferior to cityfolk like the Romans. The Romans felt these second class people had no culture, didn't speak properly and worshipped the wrong gods (not the Roman gods). This last meaning is all that is left of the Roman tradition of name calling. Pagans is the name we now assign to people that do not follow the "right" god(s). " Heathen" has much the same origin - people that lived in the heath without benefit of proper culture, language or gods.
Wicca comes from a different source. It is the name given to a new age cult with allusians to old English traditional religions. The name comes from the Old English word for witch. The existing tradions use a pantheon of northern European gods and a nature based doctrine.
