Gabriel is one of three angels mentioned in The Bible by name with the other two being Michael and then Lucifer who became Satan. Many have interpreted this to mean these three ministerial spirit-beings are on the same 'level' and since Michael is the only one called an archangel by name (see Jude 1:9) it is presumed Gabriel is as well - albeit with a different job.
