Casteism has acquired a lot of importance in Hinduism

In ancient Hindu Sanatan Dharma which was called Vedic Dharma, the castes were according to the work or profession of a person but with the passage of time people made it as by got by birth.

This is a method of classification in the Hindu society.

Primarily there are four main Castes - A Brahmin is one who is a pious, learned, scholar and a priest; a Kashatriya is the ruler, warrior and administrator; a Vaishya is the trader, banker and agriculturist whereas a Shudra is the artisan, the worker or a servant.

These were enunciated by Maharishi Manu in the holy scriptures Manusmriti and has been accepted and practiced since the dawn of civilisation.
