If you mean by the word (salat) the prayer as this is the Arabic word for it & as this is the section of religious questions, I can tell you that Muslims pray to Allah (God) five times a day, each prayer has its special time & the call for a prayer or what it's called in Arabic (al-athan) indicates that it's the time to pray , a Muslim must do the (wodoaa) before praying i.e. washing his face,hands......the particular organs of his body that must be cleaned & washed before he prays as a pre-condition , of course the intention of praying to Allah must exist in his/her soul , then he/she must face towards (Al-qaaba) which is in the city of Mekka in KSA , he/she stands and says (Allah Akbar)i.e. God is the greatest then reads al- fateha from the Holy Quran followed by another portion he/she selects to read from what he/she memorises, the other parts of the prayer is kneeling to Allah with the statement (sobhana rabi alazeem) i.e.glory is to the Almighty God & after that he/she prostrates to Allah saying (sobhana rabi al-aala)i.e. gloryis to Allah who is the highest, however during prostration he/she can ask Allah to bless him/her, to give him anything he wishes .... or any supplication to Allah .

however submitting to Allah especially in the act of prostration is the summit of honour & dignity to the Muslim & Islam as a word means in Arabic : the complete submitting, obeying to Allah's orders. prayers are different in number of (rakaat)i.e the deeds of pray just mentioned but all prayers are ended by saying (alsalamo aaleekom)i.e. peace/greetings be upon you twice , the first is for the angel on your right & the second is for the angel on left ;as Muslims believe that there are two angels specialized to record what is done by a human, one for the good deeds & another is for the bad deeds but the second one doesn't immediately record what bad behaviour he witnesses, no ...he waits a duration of time so that the human may repairs what he has done.

By the way the" prayer" must be in Arabic whatever is the tongue of a Muslim.

the translation of al-fateha is :

"All praise is for God , the lord of all creation ,the merciful...." you can look for it in translated Quran.
