1. The term the (or, 'a') Catholic(capitalized) church is defined as one of the Christian church groups which claims historical continuity with the original, undivided, Christian (Jesus Christ's) movement.

The term catholic church (uncapitalized) is defined as the entire body of Christian churches in general. The term catholic in this context is within the meaning of 'universally accepted'.

These churches can be Protestant churches, for example: the Anglican Church, the Episcopal Church, Eastern Orthodox churches, and so on.

2. The Catholic Church, or Roman Catholic Church (all capitalized) is defined as the particular Christian church which is based in The Vatican and overseen and governed by its leader, the bishop of Rome, known as pope (or the Pope, or The Pope, or the Holy father) as well as by its hierarchy of bishops. This governing body is known as an episcopal organization. This is the only Church which was founded by Our Blessed Lord, Jesus Christ, and guaranteed by Him to teach and to bring Him to the people, and people to Christ, until the end of the world.

3. The word catholic (uncapitalized) also means 'in a broad sense', or 'of broad interest', or 'universal', without necessarily any connection to any kind of religious group; for example:

'Their library is huge, they have such catholic tastes in reading.'

'We were disappointed in the movie festival; you couldn't exactly say the films chosen represented a catholic view of the industry.

See the links below for information on the Roman Catholic Church and on the Catholic, (and catholic,) church.

It was the original form of Christianity before there was the revolt by Martin Luther (no not King or King, Jr.), who started the Protestant religion. This was due to corruption in the Catholic Church (no, we do NOT pay for our sins).
