Since Matthew is writing for a Jewish audience, this Gospel has a slant which reflects this. He points to a number of Old Testament prophecies to show Jesus as the Jewish Messiah. The conflict between Jesus as the authoritative teacher with God's point of view, interpreting His own law, versus the perversions of the teachers of Jesus' day is also to the forefront. Matthew 23 is a whole chapter of stinging rebukes for such teachers who should have known better.

What is known as the Book of Gospels?
There are four books in the New Testament known as "the gospels". They are the Gospel according to Matthew, the Gospel according to Mark, the Gospel according to Luke and the Gospel according to John.
