Since most history books (in high school) are somewhat Eurocentric, pre/post enlightenment is most likely referring to the Renaissance era of Europe (14th through the 17th Centuries A.C.E)

During this time period, subjects such as astronomy and literature were explored. The spread of knowledge was also aided by the invention of the printing press (which speeded up the time originally needed to make books).

However, there were also several other enlightenment eras in various countries. Just depends on the country you are studying. =]
